Alabama High School Football Game On AHSAA State Championship Football

The Alabama High School Football Athletic Association State Football Championships are coming up, and the Birmingham News is here to provide you with everything you need to know!

So who will be playing this year? Of course, there are always the big names like Shades Valley and Tuscaloosa as well as some of the best football programs in all of high school. But it doesn't stop there: we've got your regional games too! This year, those include Holy Spirit vs. Cullman at 7 p.m., Menlo vs. Monroeville at 7:30 p.m., Central at 7:30 p.m., Brewbaker at 8 p.m., and Woodlawn at 8 p.m.!

Looking at the big picture, we're expecting big things from all of our teams, including Birmingham, Hueytown, and Oak Mountain. Northridge vs. Fultondale at 8:00 p.m., and Baldwin County vs. Point Mallard at 8:00 p.m.

The biggest game of the night: Hueytown vs. Tuscaloosa. This will be the second time the two battle for state supremacy in this coming Saturday's game. If it goes to the wire, you can expect everything to come down to the final play.

And don't forget about the west. We've got a great game Saturday night in Alabama High School football with Central at 7:30 p.m. vs. Austin, and I would expect that to be one of the best games from the west, no matter how people feel about "white-only" districts!

But enough of all this talk about high school football now: let's talk for a second about the big news of the week and that's the new Tuscaloosa News story about Alabama State! All you guys out there who want to see these boys beat Auburn next week... well, this is the news you've been waiting for.

I'm talking about the fact that they finally got a new football coach. You might not have heard because of all this other high school football news, but the big thing here is that they finally hired somebody who knows how to play some ball!

That's right: Alabama State got a football coach who was never head of a team before. I'm talking about Charlie Harbison, who was the head of the Alabama State University Swim Team. How can we trust him to lead a football team? That's just ridiculous!

Sure, he's a good swimmer, but what does that have to do with playing football? I've never seen someone who could play one sport and then be able to find success with another. It just doesn't happen. This is going to be an interesting season for sure. I mean.. what are Alabama State's chances at beating Auburn next week now?

I think MSNBC is doing a special tonight on Harbison, so we'll see how that goes. I expect it to be "fair and balanced," no matter what they say. I mean, let's cross our fingers and hope that this is a good idea. If it doesn't work out, then we can all blame the new coach and we can focus on the real reason Alabama State lost the game: their incompetent players didn't play well enough!

I look forward to seeing you all next week for more high school football action! Don't forget to come back for Northridge vs. Fultondale! That's starting at 8:00 p.m.! Y'all have a good game... and stay safe!

Both of these games were played at Legion Field in Birmingham. The home team was listed below. All dates are for Thursday night games (unless otherwise noted). The state championship games have been held at Legion Field in Birmingham since 1972. The stadium has an official seating capacity of 73,594. The stadium opened in 1926 and is nicknamed "The Old Gray Lady". It is currently undergoing a major renovation.

The Alabama High School Athletic Association covers all high schools with students who attend public or private facilities. The AHSAA was started in 1937 and has two divisions, Class 6A and Class 5A. The association is governed by a 22-member organization known as the AHSAA Board of Control.

Named after legendary Alabama coach Paul "Bear" Bryant, the current Bear Bryant trophy winner is awarded to the play espousing the most dominance over Starkville in pre-state years. All games are played at EverBank Field, home of the NFL's Jacksonville Jaguars (formerly the Florida Jaguars). Mississippi was first awarded in 1976 and won by Starkville High School. Mississippi's current winning streak began in 2004 when the Bulldogs beat Homewood High School 21–20 at Bryant-Denny Stadium. The "Tiger" trophy was introduced in 1985. The game ended up being played at Legion Field due to a scheduling conflict with Birmingham's Legion Field. (Birmingham is about 50 miles south of Tuscaloosa and Starkville.)

The first state football championship trophy was the W.C. Tutwiler Trophy. It was created in 1948 and was named after a man who was the president of the University of Alabama System at that time. The University of Alabama has won the most titles, with their latest coming in 2009 when they beat Hoover High School 31-17.

In 1989, the AHSAA started a state basketball tournament, with the finals being held in Birmingham's BJCC Arena. The University of Alabama has won the most titles, with their latest coming in 2006 when they beat Tuscaloosa County High School 57–44.

In 2001 (2004 for Class 5A), a golf tournament was added to go along with football and basketball. The format was individual stroke play to a 54-hole cut, with the top 10 individuals (top 8 for 5A) and top 3 teams from each classification advancing to state. The first title went to Auburn High School in Class 6A, with the University of Alabama winning the Class 5A and overall titles that same year.

The sixth annual Alabama high school football state championship game, originally scheduled for December 19, 2018, at Foley High School in Foley, Alabama, decided which school would win the 2018 Class 6A state football championship in Alabama's largest high school sport. Foley High School was originally scheduled to host the game but poor attendance and wet playing conditions forced the game to be moved to Robert E. Lee High School in Montgomery, Alabama.

The game was broadcast live on ESPN2 with play-by-play announcer Jason Benetti and color commentator Kirk Herbstreit announcing. This was the first year of play for ESPN2 coverage of HS football state championship games. The broadcast also included a make-shift locker room for the winning coach at each school for interviews and time-outs during the game. The 6th annual event will take place on December 16, 2018, at 7:00 p.m. CST with the broadcast slated to start at 6:00 p.m CST/7:00 p.

In 2017, the game was moved from Tuscaloosa to Birmingham and televised live on ESPNU and ESPN3 for the first time ever. The broadcast was sponsored by Coca-Cola.

The third annual Allstate Sugar Bowl/LHSAA Football Classic, also known as the Allstate Sugar Bowl Classic, was held at Tiger Stadium, home of the University of Louisiana at Lafayette Ragin' Cajuns in Baton Rouge, Louisiana on December 8–10, 2017. It is an event that features strong teams from Louisiana high schools which are played before a sold-out crowd of 32,000 fans composed mostly of fans from both teams. The 2017 Classic was broadcast on ESPN2 with play-by-play announcer Jason Benetti and color commentator Kirk Herbstreit announcing.

The Championship Game was played on December 10, 2017, at 7:00 p.m. CST, and broadcast on ESPN2 with Jason Benetti and Kirk Herbstreit announcing.
